October opens the hiking season on the Costa del Sol and one of the best places to enjoy it is Marbella. Donning your boots gives you the chance to see a very different side to the resort from its long sandy beaches to its wooded slopes and mountain foothills. If you’d like to walk, have fun and help a good cause at the same time, why not discover Marbella 4 Days Walking?

2,000 walkers

This annual event, now in its ninth edition, takes place this year between 17 and 20 October. The participants who number over 2,000 and come from 20 different countries, join together for the Marbella 4 Days Walking. On the four days, each hiker chooses a 10, 20 or 30km hiking route and sets off to discover Marbella.

Perfect hikes

The organisers have chosen the most scenic parts of Marbella for the walking event. The shorter routes tend to combine a walk along the Marbella seafront promenade with part of the town centre. The longer 20 and 30km routes, however, take in the more challenging parts of the resort and include walking up to the foothills of Sierra Blanca. The final 30km on the last days of Marbella 4 Days Walking includes a tough hike up to Istán, a stunning white village just north of the town.

Mid-October makes a perfect time of year to discover Marbella and its hiking possibilities. Temperatures aren’t too hot, sunshine is practically guaranteed and the recent September rainfall means the countryside has regained its greenery.

Each route starts and ends at Plaza del Mar on the seafront in Marbella. Live music and festivities take place at the end of each walk as participants celebrate their day’s hike. You don’t have to walk every day – this is an event that you can dip into and out again – but hikers who complete all four days will receive a medal at the end. Children are welcome too, although under 14s must be accompanied by an adult.

Sustainable and generous

This year’s event plans to be as sustainable as possible and aims for zero plastic waste. To this end, no plastic water bottles will be used on the four days. Instead, all participants will receive a reusable bottle that they can fill up from water tanks at the refreshment posts along the routes.

Marbella 4 Days Walking also helps a good cause. For the third year in a row, donations from participants will go to Cudeca Cancer Care Hospice in Benálmadena. This local charity has been helping “add quality of life to days” for terminally ill patients on the Costa del Sol since 1991.

Comfortable hikes

While walking 10, 20 or 30km every day for four days isn’t easy, this event in Marbella does everything to make your walks as comfortable as possible. Each route comes mapped on Google or via the Strava app. This mobile phone even allows you to communicate with others on the route and find out where they are.

As well as being easy to find your way, Marbella 4 Days Walking also provides plenty of refreshments including coffee along each route. You’ll also find refreshment stations and medical assistance if you should need it.
