WHERE TO SEE THE BEST ART ON THE COSTA DEL SOL

As well as sun, sea, sand and of course golf, the Costa del Sol has lots to offer. Over the last ten years this part of southern Spain has made something of a name for itself in the world of art. Some world-class museums are located here and they’re not all in Malaga. Read on to discover the best place to see art on the Costa del Sol.

Capital of museums in Malaga

Our list wouldn’t be complete without a nod to Malaga, a city that has forged a reputation for showcasing some of the world’s most famous artists. Among the over 30 museums in Malaga are several art galleries well worth visiting.
Check out one of the world’s best collections of Picasso works at the Picasso Museum. See 19th century Spanish art at the Carmen Thyssen Museum. Enjoy unusual modern art the Pompidou Centre and be amazed at the cutting-edge contemporary art on show at CAC Malaga. Finish your art tour at the Russian Museum with its unique collection on loan from the Russian State Museum in St Petersburg.

Engraving and sculptures in Marbella

But you don’t have to go all the way to Malaga to see some great art on the Costa del Sol. Just 5 minutes’ drive from Rio Real in Marbella you can take in some excellent engravings and extraordinary sculptures. The Museum of Spanish Engravings includes lithographs from Spain’s best as well as fine examples of engravings. And the building itself, stunningly restored, is another museum.
Out in the open air on the way down to the seafront promenade, Salvador Dalí takes centre stage with ten bronze sculptures. The giant structures invoke mythical creations, dolphins and shells as only Dalí knew how.

More Picasso and Dalí in Mijas

Up in the pretty white village of Mijas – its charming streets and squares are well worth a visit too – is the Mijas Centre of Contemporary Art, CAC Mijas. This fine art museum has established a reputation as one of the best places for art on the Costa del Sol.
It’s home to the Remedios Medina Collection of over 400 works. Highlights here include 70 pieces by Picasso and Dalí including the second largest collection of ceramics by Picasso in the world. Braque and Foujita also feature.

Ultra modern art in Estepona

Head west from Río Real for some more great art on the Costa del Sol to the newly opened Museo de Arte de la Diputación in Estepona. With a collection of almost 50 works, this one showcases 21st-century art with the focus on local and Andalusian artists. Admire paintings by Chema Lumbreras, Dadi Dreucol and others.
Don’t miss the building itself – the restored 18th-century mansion has one of the finest central patios on this side of the Costa del Sol. And while you’re in Estepona, take a stroll round Estepona’s street art, a succession of sculptures and giant murals.
